The sustainability of desalination plants in Australia: is renewable energy the answer?
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Most of Australia’s large urban population centres are currently experiencing water shortages. Australia’s four largest urban centres have water storage volumes less than 50% of their capacities. This is due to an expansion in total urban water demand, in large part due to population growth, combined with reduced inflows to storages due to the ongoing drought in many parts of Australia. A drought many regions, such as Sydney, are now claiming as one of the worst on record (NSW Government, 2006).

Sustainable Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination as Green Desalination in the 21st Century
Seawater reverse osmosis desalination (SWRO) requires less energy compared with the distillation method and thus is an important technology except Middle Eastern countries whereenergy costs are higher. Recently, even Middle Eastern countries where the distillation method is still a major technology, have begun adopting the RO method in new desalinationplants in line with government ...
متن کاملEnvironmental life cycle assessment of seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant powered by renewable energy
This paper evaluates life cycle Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of a Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant and assesses its performance under three power supply scenarios. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis is conducted for a plant located in Perth, Western Australia (WA). Input and output flows of SWRO plant are based on literature and Perth desalination plants. The Simapro Aus...

The paper presents an attempt to assess sustainability of desalination plants for water production based on resource, environmental and economic indicators. Four types of desalination plants are taken into a consideration: single MSF, dual purpose MSF, RO with local energy consumption and RO with PV electric energy production. The analysis is based on data from desalination plants in Gulf count...
متن کاملThe Ranking of Southern Ports and Islands of Iran for Seawater Desalination Plants Using ELECTRE III Method
The energy insecurity, environmental pollution, climate change and even reduced rainfall in some countries are prime examples of consequences of the world’s excessive reliance on fossil fuels. This study suggests that in some southern islands and coastal areas of Iran, two such problems, namely the growing shortage of potable water and air pollution can be addressed by building a wind-p...

This paper presents sizing, energy management strategy, and cost analysis for a configuration consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, fuel cell (FC) storage system, and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination technology for combined power and fresh water production. In this system, PV is the main power supply source; fuel cell is a storage system accompanied by Hydrogen production and storage d...
